The Great Things About Second Hand Books

   Posted by: admin   in Books

When you’ve finished reading our educational article about second hand books, you can impress your friends with the huge amount of knowledge you have achieved on this subject and about cheap books in general.

In general, I like brand-new things. I have never liked second hand furniture or second hand clothes. I don’t want to wear something that someone already wore. The very thought kind of disgusts me. As for second hand furniture, I like my house to be well decorated with new, shiny things. I do not want some worn, weathered couch in my living room. One thing I have always liked used, however, is books. I cannot get enough of used bookstores, and visit them whenever I get the chance.

Some of my friends would consider these to be second hand books, but I consider them antiques. What is great about second hand book stores is that you can find interesting reads that are long out of print. Publishing decisions are not based on the quality of book but on the ability to sell. At second hand bookshops, you might be able to find something that, in its day, was quite a classic but has fallen by the wayside amidst the millions and millions of books that have been printed over the years. I have found some amazing second hand books in my time. I found, for example, an illustrated Encyclopedia of the ancient world from the turn of the century. It was fascinating because it detailed the prevailing views of science at the time, views which now we see as quaint and outdated, but which back then were the cutting edge. The best used books can be a window into the past, allowing us to see the way people saw themselves and their world at a certain point in time.

Ask yourself a few simple questions to determine if you fully understand the concepts that we have went over so far.

Another great thing about second hand books is that they make such great decorative additions to your house. I know this is shallow of me, but in my living room the books do not serve merely as scholastic function. I like people to know that I am intelligent and well read, and having a wide variety of books on different subjects conveys this impression admirably. Modern books are printed in a fairly standard and uniform way, but with old antique books, there were many different conventions. Some of them are printed on fancy paper with handcrafted, uneven edges. Other ones are of unusual sizes or shapes. Every once in awhile, I even find second hand books filled with illuminated pages. They make such varied and colorful eye candy that I just cannot resist the temptation. Even if it is years before I read a book, I will still enjoy having it in my shelf.

As my smart grand father always said, knowledge equals power, so continue reading knowledge about second hand books until you feel you are adequately educated on the subject. You can gain more information about this fun and exciting topic if you Google it.

Before we begin to give you additional information on this topic about Little House On The Prairie, take a moment to think about how much you already know.

I think that there are times in our lives when we crave having things simpler. I know there have been times when I have wanted to just have time stop for a while so that I can catch up and also enjoy the here and now. It is crazy how busy life gets at time. It seems that when I was young time went much slower, but when I reflect upon this I realize that a big reason for this is that I was not responsible for much. My parents transported us to where we needed to be they did the cooking and laundry and most of the cleaning. I am sure that my mom felt the same way I do at times.

I think it is this chronic want for more time that explains the popularity of everything having to do with little house of the prairie. I think there is something very appealing of living a life where a family works together to form a home and to make their living from the land. The book Little House On the Prairie was part of a series written by Laura Ingals Wilder. The books outline the life that she lived with her family as they moved from the East coast to the Midwest to settle the land. The books have been popular among young women for generations. They have maintained their popularity because of the hit television show Little House on the Prairie. The show first aired in the mid seventies and was on television for over ten years. There were also several other family shows that were developed based on characters from Little House of the Prairie. The shows always had a good message for children and adults. They were basic reminders to be kind to yourselves and one another. The plot usually involved one of the main characters struggling with an issue that challenged their beliefs or values. They always made the right decision in the end. There was rarely and violence and no sexual innuendos.

As you continue to read this article, pay special attention to how parts 1 and 2 relate to one another.

I loved this show growing up. I think the main reason I watched it faithfully each week is that it taught me that a man could show feelings and still be tough. My father was a stoic German farmer who worked very hard but did not express his feelings about things. Based on growing up with him I thought this was thee way men are. It was nice to have the experience through television that it was ok for men to express how they felt. I wish they could bring back such strong family centered shows for my children to watch.

Having this information about Little House On The Prairie will help you a great deal the next time you find yourself in need of it.

Non Fiction Books Is The Most Entertaining

   Posted by: admin   in Books

There are times when I realize that parenting is the hardest job that any of us take on. It is also the most rewarding and fun activity also. I did not realize the time and patience that is required to help a child to adulthood. There are the years of infancy and preschool when there are constant care needs as well as supervision for safety. Once they begin to learn there is the constant need to challenge their minds to insure they do not get bored or frustrated with learning. This is done through reading, playing games and coming up with activities that challenge them to use their imaginations. The things that are needed to develop a well adjusted child seem endless.

My two children are very different from each other. My son likes to finish one thing before he goes onto the next. He is very neat and precise in everything that he does. If he starts something and needs to leave it before it is finished he is very deliberate in how he puts it away. He also loves to read. When he was in fourth grade he would bring home different books on science, animals and geology. I was amazed at how much he loved to learn; however I was concerned that he was too serious. One day I asked him if only liked non fiction books. He asked me what I meant by non fiction books. I told him that there were many books that were made up that people read for entertainment. These were books that described fantasies and make believe. He said he did not think he would like these kinds of books.

My daughter on the other hand loves to read anything and everything about fantasy. She has a rich make believe life including dressing up and pretending that she is one of the characters in the books she reads. She has a difficult time completing her work at school, not because she does not understand it, but because she is distracted so easily. She thinks non fiction books are boring because they rarely have the action in them that she seems to crave. I told my husband one day that I wish that we could some how blend the two of them. They both seem to have the extremes of their personalities rather than a nice combination. Our hope is that they will learn from each other. Our son needs to be less serious and our daughter needs to get better focused.
